<businessweek>Giving a Presentation Worthy of TED V Part 1

Here
are some pointers, gleaned from talks by influential minds at the
annual TED conference, to help you improve the presentations you give.

If
you are unfamiliar with TED, this annual conference brings together the
brightest minds out there to share ideas on a wide range of topics they
hope can help change the world. While TED charges people a whopping
$6,000 each to attend the actual event, videos of the presentations are
made freely available on their website. The presentations are generally
thought-provoking, fascinating and deeply inspiring. What is more, the
delivery is superb and anyone who has a presentation to give would do
well to emulate them.

One area that TED is well-known
for is the 18-minute time limit it rigidly keeps. The lesson here is to
keep your presentation brief. While 18 minutes may perhaps not sound
like a long amount of time for your purposes, just remember that TED
speakers are touching on ideas that are potentially game changing. If
the creator of the most powerful global computation system in the world
can fit into 18 minutes a talk on making the entirety of human
knowledge computational and searchable, then theres no reason why you
should need that much time to say what you have to! As Henry Thoreau
once said, "Our lives are frittered away by detail... Simplify,
simplify!"

Next, it is important to be passionate about
the topic you choose, so that your presentation is exciting and
inspiring. At TED, it doesn matter who is giving a talk about what, the
speakers come across powerfully because they truly care about their
chosen field and have often spent years obsessing about what they are
talking about. If you are going to give an impressive talk, you need to
be genuinely excited to have the opportunity to share what you know.
